The Ambulatory Free States of Obsidia  are the culmination of a lifelong dream of our beloved Founder, First Visionary,  Grand Marshal Yagjian. Grand Marshal Yagjian dreamed from early childhood of one day founding her own nation. As she grew from a young punk into a discontented adult she developed a growing desire to distance herself  ideologicly and physically from American consumer culture. Frustrated by the daily grinding patriacrhy that seems so insurrmountable she found herself slogging down the muddy path of artistic frustration and  financial instability. 

 

With the idea of forming her own nation still on the back burner she eventualy settled down  in the prohibitively expensive, San Francisco Bay Area. Affording a space for such an undertaking seemed completely beyond her means and  Our Founder almost lost hope,  entering a dark period of near-despair which historians of Obsidia refer to as The Trials.  Fortunately, however, the story does not end here.

 

Finally one day while mulling over chunks of Obsidian recovered from a hike. Ideas congealed.  In a flash of almost superhuman genius, she seized a large chunk of obsidian and declared a new territory,  the Ambulatory Free States of Obsidia. A sovreign state founded as a refuge to challenge the reigning hegemony so that all people could have opportunity to live in peace and matriarchy.

 

In this monumentous act Our Founder  challenged the accepted notion that a nation-state must be affixed permanently to the Earth, and furthermore that such a nation-state must be greater in mass than any one of its citizens.  In short "mental succesion" was paramount. These innovations were sufficient in over comeing the most inconvenient of the barriers to sovereign statehood; that is, having any appreciable amount of money. so brilliant in their simplicity, they seem obvious only in hindsight.
